Ann graduated in 1952 with a BA honours first class in Social Administration. His project made a contribution to the fields of local history, oral history and labour history. This was to prove the beginning of a distinguished academic career in the fields of Russian history, politics and culture. Turning down a pre-arranged job and travelling to Nottingham was a life changing step for her. She left to take up teaching, a decision that facilitated a career break to bring up two sons, and which provided a convenient route back into employment, following the untimely death of her husband in a road accident. He was also much in demand as a popular lecturer on the history of Beeston, taught a WEA class on that subject and led the research efforts when that class became a research group.
